Survey shows drop of Japanese business expansion in China
by Brian TurnerThe Japan External Trade Organization (Jetro) published a survey on Thursday that showed a drop in the number of Japanese companies planning to expand their operations in China.
In December, 86 percent of the 414 companies surveyed said they would be expanding their business interests in China; in a May survey, only 54.8 percent said they would increase their involvement in China. 5.6 percent of companies said they would downsize production in China or move production to other countries, and 7.5 percent said they planned to cancel or put off until later projects planned for China.
Only 9.7 percent said their business had already suffered losses due to tensions between Japan and China, but more said that they felt effects would continue into the future. The results of Jetro’s survey highlight the fall-out from April demonstrations in China which targeted Japanese business and continuing conflict between the two nations.
The demonstrations were protests over history textbooks published in Japan that China said do not accept responsibility for Japanese wartime aggression against China as well as over Tokyo’s desire to take a permanent seat on the Security Council of the United Nations.
There have also been disagreements over territory and energy rights between the two countries, and China recently showed displeasure at plans by the Japanese prime minister to visit a war shrine that is seen as very nationalistic in spirit.
