EBay joins with Global Sources

by Brian Turner

EBay announced on Thursday that it is joining with Global Sources, a Singapore-based business-to-business media company that helps Asian companies reach potential customers worldwide, to offer Asian manufacturers easier access to eBay’s online auction site.

Global Sources claims to have 130,000 suppliers, over half of whom are in China, but it will not estimate how many of them would sign up for inclusion in the new service.

At first, the new service, Global Sources Direct, will be offered on EachNet, eBay’s auction site inside China. Later, the service will be extended to the rest of the world on a schedule that is yet to be determined.

The plan will allow eBay’s most active users - ”powersellers” - access to Chinese-made products for resale online.

Powersellers are e-Bay users who sell $1,000 or more worth of goods online each month and who have a high satisfaction rating from buyers. These high-volume sellers will have access to Global Sources’ suppliers through eBay’s Resellers Market, a wholesale market separate from eBay’s main site.
