Samsung rapped for hindering investigation
by Brian TurnerSouth Korea’s Fair Trade Commission levied a fine of Won60 million on Samsung Electronics on Tuesday for “systematically hindering” an investigation into the electronics giant’s unfair contracting practices.
The investigation began as an inquiry into accusations of subcontracting irregularities between Samsung and its semiconductor-manufacturing subsidiary, Semes. According to the FTC, however, last November Samsung ordered Semes to destroy or forge a number of key documents, activities aimed at frustrating the investigation.
The FTC also says that Samsung instructed Semes employees about how to answer questions posed by the commission in the course of its investigation.
The Won60 million fine was divided equally between the company and two of its directors, and is not so much a monetary penalty for Asia’s largest electronics company as it is an embarrassment for Samsung, which has cultivated its international stature.
Samsung did not comment on the ruling.
