Sony bets big on India

Japanese electronics giant Sony Corporation has announced a target of $ 2 billion in terms of revenue from India operations in the coming two years. Theoretically speaking, around $ 1 billion would come from its consumer electronics business.

According to sources, Sony would invest Rs. 150 crore for brand and channel enhancement with special emphasis being laid on operations and tapping Indian rural market. It is worth mentioning in this regard that Sony Corporation operates in India through four companies, namely, Sony BMG, Sony Entertainment, Sony-Ericsson and Sony India.

For the first quarter ended June 30, Sony India, recorded a staggering 26 per cent increase in sales at Rs. 596 crore, against Rs. 472 crore in the same period last fiscal.

While launching the 11-inch organic light emitting diode television in New Delhi, Managing Director of Sony India, Masaru Tamagawa told media persons that company is working hard to achieve the target of selling around one lakh LCD sets in the 32” category this year.
