India’s dream to make Indian airports an international aviation centre need more work
by Vipin AgnihotriIndia’s dream to make Indian airports an international aviation centre may have to wait a bit longer. According to recent survey, India’s airport charges are the second highest among Asian and Gulf airports, after Hong Kong, which is a top-notch airport.
It is worth mentioning in this regard that international flights pay 33 per cent more as compared to the domestic flights landing at the same airport in India. On the other hand, airports of other countries do not have differential tariff.
When our team of reporters asked various experts in this regard, they were of the view that although India is the second highest among Asian airport, airlines do not get value for money at Indian airports. In other word, airlines pay more yet does not get desired service levels as they get in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Dubai.
At this moment of time the charges at Indian airports are 60 to 70 per cent higher as compared to high-quality airports in South-East Asia or West Asia. Though, Indian government can lower airport charges by increasing non-aeronautical charges. You may not believe at first but the airport charges of India are also several folds higher than in Europe and the US.
All in all, to fulfill its potential as one of the world’s great aviation market an Airport Economic Regulatory Authority is an absolute must for India.
