Hyundai Motor all set to start its commercial vehicle business in India
by Vipin AgnihotriKorean automotive giant Hyundai Motor is all set to begin its commercial vehicle business in India. According to sources, company has already started talking with Eicher group regarding a stake in Eicher Motors. Theoretically speaking, Eicher Motor’s is India’s third biggest commercial vehicle maker.
Not so long ago, DaimlerChrysler and Volvo has also shown keen interest in Eicher Motors. Though, they rejected the offer from these companies at that time but now they are ready for collaboration.
The main reason behind this reversal from Eicher Motors is the realization of the fact that Indian truck makers are not that technically sound in terms of making sophisticated trucks. In general, there are two main aspects that drive the truck, namely, the engine and the gearbox. And that is where, Indian companies, including the No.1 player still don’t have bigger engines to power long haul trucks that ply on expressways.
Interestingly, Tata Motors have access to Daewoo technology but despite that they had to incorporate Iveco’s latest engines in its trucks in Korea to compete with their competitors. Big investment and plenty of time in terms of development is quite mandatory for the rapidly changing emission norms and complexity of engine technology.
With advancement in sectors such as infrastructure and mining in addition to demand for quicker trucks, Indian companies are starting to feel the heat from foreign players. It is worthwhile pointing that although trucks sold by companies such as Volvo, Scania and Force-Man are costly in nature as compared to Indian companies; still they are more in demand.
