Asia Minnow Increases GDP Through Domain Name Registration
by Stewart DouglasAsian-Pacific minnow Tokelau has increased its GDP by 10% as a result of a long term deal involving its country code top level domain (CCTLD), the suffix to domain names which are essential in setting up a website.
The tiny island, home to just 1,500, has significantly added to its economy by trading its .tk top level domain name in conjunction with a prolific Dutch investor, which has seen in excess of 1.6 million of the names registered.
The unorthodox business model offers the .tk country code for free in return for displaying network advertising on behalf of Dutch entrepreneur Joost Zuurbier, who acquired a contract with the island authorities to use the domain name country code exclusively.
In return for this, his company make a small fee to the island, which is attributable for a significant 10% of the total island economy and has seen enormous advancements in technology and telecommunications on the island.
The island was engaged in a four year long struggle to establish their own domain top level code as a result of their relative anonymity in world geography.
So discreet is the island that ICAAN, the authority responsible for Internet naming, actually doubted its existence for a period, and were initially reluctant to grant the domain name extension for the nation.
Prior to the introduction of the business, the island had just 12 computers in total, with radios the most common communications technology.
As a consequence of its involvement in technology markets, the tiny nation is now one of the most ‘connected’ in the world, with the vast majority of the population relying on advanced telecommunications systems like voice of internet protocol and instant email messenger.
The island also has satellite broadband access, despite the fact that at present the connection remains fairly slow, and is the biggest national retailer of free country code top level domains.
