Indian delegation to meet British PM
by Jo BlackA 15-member high-level delegation led by Mr Sunil Bharti Mittal, President, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Chairman and Group CEO, Bharti Enterprises is scheduled to meet Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on 25th March 2008 in London.
The CII delegation has been invited to meet with the British Prime Minister as a follow up to his visit to India in January 2008. It is expected that issues relating to trade and investment, innovation, skills and climate change will be discussed with the Prime Minister. The meeting will mark the third interaction with Britain’s Prime Minister by CII in the last 18 months and is reflective of the increasing engagement by Indian business with the United Kingdom.
Currently, India ranks second in terms of foreign investment in the UK, in terms of employment generated. The UK is India’s fourth largest trading partner globally and the second largest in Europe, after Germany. Bilateral trade in goods and services stands at approximately GBP 8.7 billion. India is the UK’s 16th largest export market for goods and 22nd largest market for services. India is at 22nd position as a source of goods imports for the UK and 15th as a source of service imports.
During the visit to London, the delegation will also be calling on HRH The Duke of York, who is also the UK’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment as well as meeting with Mr E Mervyn Davies OBE, Chairman, Standard Chartered PLC and Chairman, Business Council for Britain and Baroness Shriti Vadera, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Business and Competitiveness, Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), Her Majesty’s Government. The Business Council for Britain was set up by Prime Minister Brown last summer to advise him on issues that affect enterprise, business and the long term productivity and competitiveness of the economy.
