Official Opening Of Hangzhou Bay Bridge Set For May

by Elisha Sanders

China has announced that the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, which will be the longest sea-spanning bridge in the world, will officially open on May 1st.

Chief commander of the bridge building project, Wang Yong, said that 95% of construction was complete, and that only ancillary work was yet to be completed.

Once the bridge which spans the Hangzhou Bay close to Shanghai, opens to traffic in May, the trip from Shanghai to Ningbo will be reduced by 120km.

At completion, the construction of the cable-stayed bridge will have cost 11.8 billion yuan ($1.64 billion).

This marks the culmination of a five year effort which began in November of 2003.

Wang stated that the building of this bridge will help provide vital economic integration and industrial development in the Yangtze River Delta, an area of 100,000 square km which encompasses Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu - where 72.4 million people reside.
