by Elisha Sanders

China’s National Aerospace Industrial Base and the China Academy of Space Technology have signed a landmark deal in which they are to co-build a world class aerospace base in China’s Northwest Shaanxi Province.

The National Development and Reform Commission deputy director, Zhang Xiaoqiang, said that the region was an aerospace hub, within China, and that more than 200 research centers already exist there.

The news base will be directed by Zhao Hongzhuan, who has said that this new project will be in a class to draw aerospace companies and research institutes from around the world.

Though the base will eventually span a massive 6 sq km, the initial phase of the project will only be 1.7 sq km and will be intended for developing and building new satellites, and IT related projects with a bent towards being beneficial towards civil operations.

Forecasts for the revenues which will be generated out of the base by competitive enterprises and technological innovations is 20 billion yuan ($2.7 billion) by 2012.

The base has been titled the Shanghai Center and is already underway. The first phase of building includes a research and development centre, an industrial base, and a scientific park.
