by Jo Black

The 1st batch of the Visionary Leaders for Manufacturing (VLFM) Programme being implemented in India by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will arrive in Japan on May 25, 2008 for the final leg of this unique learning programme.

The programme, being implemented with the tremendous support of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has 46 participants and is being personally guided by Prof. Shoji Shiba, the world renowned expert in Breakthrough Management.

46 leaders represent 21 companies, amongst whom are Godrej group, Sona group, Anand Group, Crompton Greaves, Ashok Leyland, TVS Motors, Mico Bosch, Vardhaman group, Brakes India, UCAL etc.

These participants will visit some Japanese companies as well as interact with a number of businessmen both Indian and Japanese.

The Programme, which had found mention in the joint agreement signed by the Prime Minister of Japan and Prime Minister of India in December 2006, has received tremendous support from Government of Japan.

Thanking the Government of Japan for their support, on Mr. Kiran Deshmukh, Leader of the delegation and Board member, VLFM Division, Confederation of Indian Industry said that the visit is being planned and organized by JICA.

He said the visit would enable participants to learn the Japanese production system, give them an outsider’s view of India and an understanding of how the Japanese society has imbibed the manufacturing culture in their every day lives.

JICA have provided full support for making Professor Shoji Shiba available to India for three years at their cost.

In addition, 6 Japanese experts of highest level including those conferred Merit of Culture in Japan, CTO of Toshiba, Sony and Canon etc, have been dispatched by JICA for a total about 50 person days, she added.

Apart from regular visits of JICA officers to India, one Japanese coordinator has been appointed and dispatched to India for a period of three years.

The VLFM Programme, being implemented by CII is a path breaking programme which has brought together the Indian industry, academia and the government to work towards the transformation of the manufacturing sector in India.

The Government of India has also provided full support through the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council and the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

A recent review report of the programme revealed visible analytical and leadership skill enhancement in more than 90% of participants and the practice of a wider perspective in daily business activity i.e. BIG M.

The programme has also been successful in creating close cooperation between industry, academia and government in India through the development and delivery of the VLFM Programme.

The 2nd Batch of the Programme is expected to be launched in July 2008. According to Prof. Shoji Shiba, while the programme started with the objective of transforming India’s manufacturing sector, the focus is now on building a shared dream for the sector, one that will drive the growth of the individual, the organisation, the industry and the economy.

Mr. J N Godrej, Chairman, VLFM Division said that a similar national dream enabled the Japanese and the US industry and society to grow in the past.

He said that India hopes to replicate similar success by creating the joy of learning by action and working towards the realization of a national dream.

He expressed gratitude to Prof. Shoji Shiba for making this noble contribution to India.
