April/May Railway freight revenue up

Indian Railways generated Rs.89.9629 billion ($2.24 billion) of revenue earnings from freight traffic during April-May 2008 as compared to Rs. 73.5679 billion ($1.83 billion) during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 10.87 per cent.

Railways carried 137.73 million tonnes of freight traffic during April-May 2008 as compared to 124.98 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 10.20 per cent.

The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 80993 million during April-May 2007 to 89335 million during April-May 2008, showing an increase of 10.30 per cent.

According to data provided by Railway Ministry, of the total earnings during the month of May 2008, Rs. 16.17.60 billion ($404 million) came from transportation of 29.46 million tonnes of coal; followed by Rs. 9.7554 billion ($243.8 million) from 12.53 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic user; Rs. 3.7524 billion ($93.8 million) from 7.05 million tonnes of cement; Rs. 3.3798 billion ($84.4 million) from 3.64 million tonnes of foodgrains; Rs. 2.7381 billion ($68.45 million) from 3.22 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL); Rs. 2.3230 billion ($58 million) from 2.20 million tonnes of Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points; Rs. 1.6790 billion ($41.9 million) from 2.81 million tonnes of fertilizers; Rs. 706.5 million ($17.6 million) from 0.93 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants except iron ore; Rs. 1.8003 billion ($45 million) from 2.29 million tonnes by container service; and Rs. 3.68.58 billion ($92.1 million) from 5.82 million tonnes of other goods.
