India pavilion witnesses global attention at BIO 2008

The Indian pavilion at BIO 2008 in San Diego, USA, which was inaugurated by Mr. N S Samant, Indian Joint Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, was attended by more than 20,000 visitors from over 50 countries.
BIO is the largest biotech event in the world and India has been participating in BIO since the year 2002.
CII also organized two India sessions on “Alternative Energy Resources in India through Biotechnology” and “The Future of Indian Biotechnology Industry” on 17 & 18 of June respectively at San Diego.
While addressing the first India session, Mr. N S Samant said that Indian government is taking various initiatives to encourage R&D and innovation in the biofuel sector and making efforts to scale up the industry.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr. K V Subramaniam, President, Reliance Life Sciences highlighted India’s potential for alternative energy resources, which lies in biofuels with significant biomass opportunity with availability of 142 million hectare arable land and 30 million hectare of wasteland.
Mr. Subramaniam further added that India is now moving from learning phase to building scale.
Bioethanol and Biodiesel are the future alternative energy resources for India, said Mr. Shrikumar Suryanarayan, Director General, ABLE.
Mr. Suryanarayan highlighted differences between U.S. and India on sustainability criteria for land based biofuel solution.
Mr. Suryanarayan said that the use of marine algal cultivation was a sustainable and potential biofuel solution.
