Assocham favours ‘Aviation Economic Regulator’

by Jenny Hodge

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), the highest body of the Chambers of Commerce of India, has urged the Indian federal government to set up an ‘Aviation Economic Regulator’, to ensure space allocations within airport premises in a fair manner.

The ASSOCHAM move came in the wake of a nearly 4900% increase in non-aeronautical service charges in civil aviation industry within the last 6 months.

The ASSOCHAM Civil Aviation Committee Chairman, Mr. Jagdish Gupta along with its Co-Chairman, Mr. H S Khola, told media persons at a press conference in New Delhi that space allocations charges within the airport premises in India are the highest in the world.

Providing details of the charges, Gupta said that the charges for 300 sq. meter, which were Rs. 3000 ($75) only six months ago, today hovered around Rs.150,000 ($3750).

The ASSOCHAM Civil Aviation Committee has urged the government to review the handling charges like hanger space, parking charges, ticketing counter space and backup office space, and airport development fees.
