Freight Up 9% On Indian Railways
by Ed RobertsIndian Railways, one of the largest and busiest rail networks in the world, registered an increase of 9.42 per cent in freight traffic, to carry 202.99 million tonnes of revenue earning freight traffic during April-June 2008, against the freight traffic of 185.51 million tonnes actually carried during the corresponding period last year.
The Railways showed an increase of 7.81 per cent in carrying 65.26 million tonnes revenue earning freight traffic during the month of June 2008, over the actual freight traffic of 60.53 million tonnes carried by the Indian Railways during the same period last year.
Indian Railways is a Department of the Government of India, under the Ministry of Railways, and is tasked with operating the rail network in India.
Indian Railways has a total state monopoly on India’s rail transport, transporting seventeen million passengers and more than one million tonnes of freight daily.
The railways traverse the length and breadth of the country; the routes cover a total length of 63,465 km (39,435 miles).
